This reminds me of the Charlie Chaplin story, that the famous actor entered a competition of Charlie Chaplin impersonators and came in third. Actually the competition was for impersonating his character "The Tramp" which looked quite different from the real Chaplin without the make-up and costume. The competition in question actually took place in a theatre in San Francisco in 1915. Chaplins ranking is not recorded but apparently he didn´t even make the final. Chaplin told a reporter that he was "tempted to give lessons in the Chaplin walk, out of pity as well as the desire to see the thing done correctly."
So people actually preferred an imitation to the real macoy.
